Court ruling on working rights signals rightward shift (US Supreme Court)

The US Supreme Court has ruled 5-4 in favour of disallowing statutory overtime pay for automobile service advisors. The decision split along ideological lines, with the five conservative justices, whose numbers now include Trump appointee Neill Gorsuch, ruling for the majority. Liberal justice Ruth Bader-Ginsberg has warned that this case could be the start of an attempt to roll back New-Deal era regulations designed to protect employees from overwork.

Use this example to show show the impact of Supreme Court appointments (Gorsuch has a track record of favouring bosses over staff), and how the court’s interpretation of Congressional law (in this case the Fair Labor Standards Act 1938) will always ensure it cannot avoid the “political thicket”.
