Primaries are perhaps the only way for voters to have a genuine choice of candidates in a system that creates safe seats through gerrymandering in Congress, and which uses a Winner Takes All electoral system in presidential elections that preserves two-party hegemony. Genuine representation is even further bastardised by an unreformed electoral college that can ignore the popular vote. Yet primaries do little to make up for the flaws in US democracy, as this episode of the podcast makes abundently clear.
