An inconvenient truth - the American occupation of Haiti

An inconvenient truth - the American occupation of Haiti

Mike Duncan has now finished his sprawling epic of the Haitian Revolution, with the final episode centring on what came next. Of particular interest is Duncan's retelling of the American occupation of island from 1915 to 1934. Duncan doesn't hold his punches:

  • The Americans reintroduced forced labour.
  • Established a centralised police force that became a tool for future dictators.
  • Imposed a new constitution through a referendum, whereby the voting population had to effectively ask permission from the military for a no vote.
  • Lifted the ban on foreign ownership, allowing American companies to dominate the economy even after the US forces withdrew.

Why is this occupation not taught in US classrooms?
