Good things still happened in 2016
Credit to The Guardian for putting this set of articles together, which showcase some heartwarming stories in a year that will be remembered for Trump, Brexit and Aleppo. Let's not forget Tim Peake's time in space, Boaty McBoatface and Leicester City winning the English Premier League. The Pope gave European leaders a lesson in leadership and invited Syrian refugees to live in Rome, while the Ozone Layer showed signs of healing. London got its first Muslim mayor and the families of the Hillsborough victims finally had their day in court. Teenage pregnancies reached a record low in England, owing to a Labour government policy drive from 1999 onwards. Meanwhile, pandas are going in the opposite direction and are now off the endangered species list. While these stories pale in comparison to truly depressing global events, they and many like them offer the "Tiny Ripples of Hope", to quote from Robert Kennedy, upon which we can draw some optimism for 2017.
