The New Yorker's John Cassidy calls into question Republican claims to be responsible fiscal stewards. Speaking on the magazine's Political Scene podcast, Cassidy asserts that there have been five big economic growth periods in the US since in the past 50 years. Four out of five of them have occurred when a Democrat has been in the White House. He continues:
"Deficits have tended to go up under the Republicans and they tend to come down under the Democrats."
Reagan, that darling of the right, oversaw a ballooning of the federal government budget deficit, and is second only to George W Bush when it comes to unaffordable tax cuts and unsustainable increases in military spending.
