When Malcolm X came to Brum

White only streets and "n*****s go home" signs are often associated more with the deep south than with the black country. Yet a fascinating Channel 4 documentary covers a less well known story of Conservative politician Terry Griffith, who in 1964 encouraged legal segregation in his West Midlands constituency of Smethwick. Following Griffiths' election to parliament, a British Ku Klux Clan was also formed. Malcolm X got on a plane.

While Griffiths lost his seat at the next election, it is chilling to hear some of his comments echoed by Cameron, Miliband and Farage in today's political discourse on immigration.
