Nick Clegg's blueprint for political reform is certainly ambitious, bordering on inspiring. Yet as The Guardian's Andrew Sparrow tweeted, the Department of Work and Pensions are not holding a press conference on the latest poverty figures. This highlights the relative importance of the two issues in the new adminstration. The Lib Dems appear to have accepted turning a blind eye on Tory measures that would increase inequality, such as a potential rise in VAT that hits those on low incomes the most, in return for getting their policies on constitutional reform through the House of Commons. One heckuva trade off for "stable government".
