Italy's Whore-ocracy

The New York Review of Books has a habit of conveying startling information. This month's article on Italy is indeed riveting, with Alexander Stille taking us through Silvio Berlusconi's time in power, detailing scandal after unbelievable scandal, bringing with them shame and embarrassment. Take foreign relations: "Berlusconi’s bizarre behavior kept spilling over into international relations, leading to numerous
embarrassing episodes. Seemingly jealous of Barack Obama’s star power, he referred to the newly elected US president as “tall, handsome, and suntanned.”

In a bid to shake off legal charges of corruption, Italy's prime minister is sponsoring a law that will not only exempt him, but will also lead to the dropping of cases against some 80-100,000 white-collar criminals. No going after bankers in Rome, then. Indeed, those people who have avoided tax by placing their ill-gotten gains in tax havens can return their deposits to Italian banks by paying a small fee.

And then there are the sex scandals. Young ladies (girls according to some) have claimed to have been involved in what can only be described as orgies, with fierce competition over who can sit next to Italy's premier and satisfy him the most. Those who have spoken out have been attacked by Berlusconi's vast media empire, while those who remain quiet have climbed up the greasy pole, so to speak. According to the film Videocracy, showgirls who have entertained Italy's "emperor" have been rewarded with, among other things, seats in parliament. A "Whore-ocracy" indeed.
