Michael Palin never ceases to impress. In a somber documentary commemorating 90 years since the end of hostilities, he notes that around 3000 US soldiers were killed on the last day of the first world war. The armistice was signed at 5am on November 11th 1918 and came into effect at 11am that day. In those six hours American generals sent more men to their deaths than those who perished at Pearl Harbour, or those who died on 9/11. A startling and deeply troubling statistic.
